Someone I considered a friend attempted to justify the use of blackface in cosplay to me today. Rather than post screencaps of that incident, I’m reblogging my opinion on blackface in general.
Here is my take on black face for cosplay
I have been asked a few times why I don’t wear black face, or even a wig when playing Luke Cage. It is just not needed, Luke Cage is an Iconic character, no one misstates who I am paying homage to when I put on the yellow shirt and boots. If I were to cosplay the Purple Man I would go purple, or martian manhunter I would go green, because that is part of the character.and is indelible to what makes them unique. Luke Cage, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Wolverine, Iron Man, Black Canary, Aquaman and a hundred other superheroes are not defined by something so trivial as melanoma levels.

Thanks for the clarification I will take care of it today by starting a new tumblr just for Luke Cage infinity universe. Thanks for the help I am a bit new to the role playing via tumblr dynamics so I appreciate any and all help :)

As part of the Luke Cage project I started a needle pick up in the Mission district. I joined up with the folks in the CAI (California Initiative) and together we picked up 1500 needles last year, and 600 plus so far this year. Here is a video they are making called Nation of Heroes and one part will show my Real Life superhero persona of Olde School doing the needle pick up and outreach thing. I want to emphasis that everything I do is made possible by friends like RocknRoll, Night Bug, Seva Sharon, Xavian, Teletran and everyone in the Initiative. Plus I want to point out that other groups such as WAI (Washington Initiative) are also doing this in their area with member like John Drop and Temper.

Free course on Gender in Comic books
Taking a free online course to better understand gender issues in comic books, which will hopefully help me better understand how civil rights are reflected in comic books. I also hope to better understand some of the issue of misogyny among cosplayers. I posted earlier that in my experiences at conventions I have not seen this but many have told me that it happens and happens much to frequently.

I have been to many, many conventions and I never really thought of this as a problem. Am I naive or blind or just too Pollyanna to have noticed?

Sometimes its about nothing but the attitude. Stay calm and do your shit my fellow RLSHers. My group is getting pretty close to 500 used needles off the streets and we are barely 3 months into the year :)
